Deadliest Catch – without the death?

My wife and I are huge fans of Deadliest Catch.  In fact, it’s one of the only shows we watch.  This season is different than the other ones in the past, mainly due to the death of long-time Cornelia Marie captain, Phil Harris.  He was one of the main guys that my wife & I liked.  Of course, we did not know him personally, but the last episodes of this season are really difficult to watch as we’re reliving Captain Phil’s last days.

Contrary to what you may have heard, death is not a natural part of life. We were not created to experience it – that’s why it’s so hard for us to deal with.  God created mankind to be in an unending relationship with Him, filled with joy, peace, and purpose.  Of course, that was messed up when humanity decided that we’d rather “be” god than serve God.  (You can read more about this in Genesis 1-3).

Because of our parents’ sin, death entered the world: both physical death (the kind we experience here) and spiritual death (the eternal torment of hell).  They got an “F” in the school of life.  And as we look over our lives, I think we would agree that we all got an “F.”  We’ve all messed up.  We all chose to be on our own god (to do things our way, for our own gain, regardless of what anyone says, even God himself).  We all, therefore, deserve unending death (both physical in the grave & spiritual in hell).

We need someone to save us from this mess.  We need someone who can “pass the school of life” for us.  We need someone to get an “A” in our place.  But we’ve all failed!  Every single person who is born into the world only serves to show how far we are from perfection.  We can’t be good enough.  How can we solve this dilemma?

That is why Jesus Christ, the Son of God, entered into humanity.  He was born of a virgin and lived a sinless life.  He got the “A” that eluded all of us.  He allowed himself to die as an innocent man to our sins, in our place.  He paid the penalty for our sin – and then rose again on the 3rd day to prove to the world that He defeated death.  And one day, He will return to rebuild His Kingdom without sin & death and to destroy those who reject His sacrifice & Lordship.

Jesus is willing to allow you to receive His “A” on your report card.  He wants to forgive you of your sins and fill you with the joy, peace, and purpose that He created mankind to enjoy.  He wants to give you a new start to your life, and the power to live the life that He created you to live.

All of this is available to everyone who asks.  I often quote these verses:

“… if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” – 1 John 1:9 (NLT)

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.  – Romans 10:9 – 10 (NLT)

Talk to God.

  1. Admit to Him that you are a sinner, that you received an “F” in life and that it was your own fault.
  2. Tell Him that you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins & rose again to defeat death.
  3. Ask The Lord to forgive you of all of your sins (this is called making Jesus  your Savior).
  4. Make a decision to turn your back on your sins & not do them any longer (this is called ‘repentance’)
  5. Commit the rest of your life to follow Jesus (this is called making Jesus your Lord, or ‘Boss’).

If you’ve done the above and really meant it with all your heart, God’s Word promises that you have been saved.  You can be assured that your sins are forgiven and paid for by Jesus.  If so, then the next step for you is to ….

  1. Get into the Bible and begin reading it daily.  A great place to start is in the book of John.
  2. Find a good church, one that really teaches from the Bible.  I invite you to come out to Solid Rock.  If you don’t live nearby, check here.
  3. Find a another Christian and let them know what you’ve done!  You need to get around others who have made Jesus their Savior & Lord.  They can pray for you & encourage you in your new life of faith.

Thank the Lord that Jesus gave his life to conquer death.  When Christians die, they are simply going to be with the Lord.  Heaven is the new home for those who have been forgiven by Christ.  And when Jesus returns, death itself will be done away with.  That will be a good day!  I love the Apostle Paul’s words:

“… when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
– 1 Corinthians 15:54 – 57 (NLT)
